PART 2 of the first run on the RIKON PJ16 jointer-planer combo.

After face-jointing this 14”-wide live-edge white oak board, it was time to convert the machine and bring it down to thickness.

The conversion is surprisingly simple: unlatch and lift the massive cast-iron jointer bed, lower the planer table, flip the dust hood into position and engage the feed rollers.

Measuring the board first would also have been simple—but apparently that required more ambition than Brother Tom could muster. The first pass was incredibly quiet…mainly because the cutterhead never touched the board. 😂

After a small adjustment, it removed about 1/16”. The helical cutterhead left an extremely smooth finish, ran much quieter than my old 13” benchtop planer and—most impressive—produced absolutely zero snipe on either end.

That was straight out of the box, with no tweaking or day-long attempt to dial everything in.

My early positives:

• A jointer and planer in one compact footprint
• Heavy, solid construction
• Smooth and quiet helical-head cutting
• Included wheel kit makes it easy to move
• Considerably more affordable than many other 16” European-style combination machines

Negatives? I’m honestly having trouble finding one so far.

This isn’t a sales pitch, and a few cuts certainly don’t qualify as a full review. I’ll run a few hundred boards through it, learn its quirks and report back after the honeymoon period is over.

But right now? I’m extremely impressed. ...

We’re testing out the tools, the layout, and the instructors! We had a bowl turning class internally and it was really awesome! 2 out of the 4 of us had never picked up a chisel or turned on a lathe before, and everyone walked away with some turning experience and their own bowl! We’re officially opening in January and are starting to book classes now! It’s a unique thing to do, definitely a fun date night, and a perfect gift for the holidays!
